Wisdom Teeth Removal in NYC

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in the back of your mouth that usually come between 17 and 25. Unfortunately, some folks have had to remove their wisdom teeth for various reasons, including gum diseases or the wrong positioning in the mouth. If you are looking to get wisdom teeth oral surgery in the New York region, here is how it works.

Before Surgery

You’ll need to book an appointment with one of the leading oral surgeons in NYC. Here are some things you should discuss with them:

  • Discuss your health problems

  • Mention any drugs you take regularly

  • Find out all you can about the surgery

  • Talk about the type of anesthesia you might take for the procedure and the possible side effects.

  • The cost of wisdom teeth removal

During Surgery

Depending on the situation, you’ll be getting any of the following types of anesthesia:

  • Local: Here’s where your doctor numbs your mouth with a shot of local anesthetics like lidocaine, mepivacaine, or gas like nitrous oxide.

  • IV sedation: The surgeon numbs your mouth and gives you drugs via a vein in your arm.

  •  General: This anesthetic is administered via your vein or gas mask.

After the anesthetic has been administered, if your tooth hasn't come through the gum, the surgeon makes an incision in the gum to access it. There might be a need to remove a small piece of the bone covering the tooth in some instances.

There might be a need to cut the wisdom tooth into smaller parts to facilitate its removal through the opening.

There will be some pressure just before the tooth is removed, and this happens because your oral surgeon has to widen the tooth socket by rocking the wisdom tooth back before it is taken out. So you will feel some pressure, but you shouldn't feel any pain once the anesthetic is working. Once the wisdom tooth has been removed, the wounds(if any) are stitched to heal faster.

The duration of a wisdom tooth removal depends on how complicated the situation is. It can be anything between a few minutes to as much as 45 minutes.

After Surgery

After the surgical procedure has been completed, here are some things you are expected to do:

  • Avoid rinsing your mouth out with liquid

  • Do not drink alcohol or smoke

  • Do not drink hot liquids

  • Steer clear of strenuous physical activity
